New Research on Micromobility Safety

As micromobility continues to expand rapidly, questions around rider safety are becoming increasingly important.

Hritik Ghorpade, a Research Analyst at AngelouEconomics has co-authored a new study, in collaboration with partners, examining the safety of e-bikes and e-scooters across the United States.

Using ten years of national injury data, the research provides a broader and more detailed picture of micromobility risks than existing studies, which have typically focused on single cities or limited datasets. By combining statistical analysis with advanced text analysis of clinical reports, the study identifies key differences in how and why injuries occur across transport modes.

The findings show that e-bikes and e-scooters present distinct risk profiles. E-bike injuries are more strongly linked to collisions with motor vehicles, while e-scooter risks are more associated with behavioral factors such as substance use. Across both modes, older riders face significantly higher risks of severe injury.

Overall, the article highlights the need for targeted, mode-specific safety measuresfrom improved infrastructure to behavioral interventionsto support the continued growth of micromobility in a safe and sustainable way.
