Texas Athletics is a major economic contributor to Austin and the state of Texas. Texas Athletics manages 20 intercollegiate sports teams, approximately 200 home events per year, and more than 500 student-athletes. The department employs approximately 350 people with a median salary of $53,864.

AngelouEconomics was retained by Texas Athletics to evaluate the full economic impact of the department on the Austin region as well as the state of Texas for football, basketball, Texas Relays, track and field, the Frank Erwin Jr. Special Events Center, and all other UT sports. The economic impact analysis put forth in this report measured Texas Athletics’ impact regarding jobs, labor income, tax benefit, and total economic output. The report quantifies the economic impact of The University of Texas at Austin Athletics Department (Texas Athletics) for the 2013 – 2014 academic year, marking it the first time that a comprehensive economic analysis has been completed for all of Texas Athletics.

The Economic Impact Analysis study found that Texas Athletics generated a total of $728 million dollars for the Texas economy, of which $610 million was generated within the Austin MSA. Texas Athletics also helped create 7,333 new jobs with a labor income of $248 million. The magnitude of the impact makes Texas Athletics the second largest event-based impact in Austin.

The report’s findings will be used by Texas Athletics as public relations material for the purpose of generating further publicity for the program. AngelouEconomics provided the department with marketing material sections for each of the five categories: football, basketball, Texas Relays and track and field, the Frank Erwin Jr. Special Events Center, and all other UT Sports. The findings can be used by the department for the purpose of facilitating municipality – University partnerships for athletic events.
